One organisation helping to promote the use of renewable energy in Asia is the Manila-based Asian Development Bank(ADB).In 2003,the ADB approved project loans totalling US6.1 bn,the highest since 1997,of which energy projects accounted for 12% of the loan total.Renewable energy projects currently form only a small part of the ADB's energy loan portfolio,but are becoming more common,particularly in rural development schemes.Hydroelectric power and natural gas have been the two energy resources to have benefited from most ADB development support,while oil and petroleum development,coal and the nuclear power industry have been left to private companies and state-backed organisations to develop.
