Quaternary ammonium salt was used as a new stationary phase for analysis of C_1-C_4 alcohols in gasoline. The method involves determination of these gasoline alcohols on 20 ft column packed with 25 percent of the quaternary ammonium salt on Chromosorb-P (100-120 mesh). This selective stationary phase efficiently separate alcohols after toluene and n-decane. This selectivity is explained in the term of the difference in the retention mechanism of the investigated solutes. The obtained results reveal that the alcohols are retained largely by partitioning mechanism while aro-matics and n-alkanes are retained by mixed retention mechanism in which interfacial adsorption is always significant.
