New sustainability standards put companies under pressure

Ten years ago sustainability reporting was a niche activity. It is still not yet a commonplace feature of many company reports - but this could be about to change. 'It only wants all large companies to do this for momentum to build up and for sustainability reporting to become the norm -and the direction of travel now is very much forward,' says Steve Rylance, Senior Manager for Communications at the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), whose guidelines are now widely accepted as the leading global benchmark. Already, 'the vast majority of the Fortune top 250 companies do this routinely,' he notes.
