The European Commission (EC) looks set to propose binding legislative standards for the 27 European Union (EU) member states to follow in exploring unconventional fossil fuel resources amid public concern over the environmental and social impacts of the main production method - hydraulic fracturing or 'fracking'. The Commission will propose a regulatory framework,' Joe Hennon, EC environment spokesperson, told Petroleum Review. 'Basically, there is a choice to be made between one overarching proposal or amending a number of [existing] environmental regulations/ directives.' The proposal, which is expected to be tabled by the EC towards the end of the year, will also build on a public consultation that ended on 23 March 2013.
