Experiments were conducted to investigate optimum concentration and duration of soaking dormant woody stems, and to find the most suitable depth of bleach solution soak and to determine ethanol effects on the release of bud dormancy for lilac (SyringaVulgaris L.), privet (Ligustrum Vulgare L.) and Vanhoutte's spirea (Spirea x Vanhouttei Zab.). Days to bud break, percent bud break and shoot elongation of forced new softwood growth were closely correlated with the bleach concentration, soaking periodand soaking depth of stems in the bleach solution, and ethanol concentrations. Optimum bud break was obtained by soaking the basal 1/3 of dormant stems either in 10% (v/v) bleach (i.e. 0.53% NaOCl) solution for 15 minutes or in 75% (v/v) ethanol solutionfor 15 minutes. Both bleach and ethanol soaks exerted negative effects on bud break of spirea, although they exhibited positive effects on lilac and privet.
