In the years from 2001 to 2011 three horses with cecocolic intussusception were treated by laparotomy. Detailed description of history, clinical presentation, laboratory diagnostics, sonographic findings and surgical procedure are reported. All patients were small breeds aged four to eleven years with an acute onset of clinical symptoms of colic. Preoperative findings including rectal examination did not allow a precise diagnosis prior to surgery. In only one case transcutaneous sonographic examination revealed a suspect diagnosis of cecocolic intussusception. After median umbilical laparotomy an incomplete cecal bypass was performed and the resulting mesenterial gab closed by suture. Despite temporary postoperative complications such as reduced general condition, fever and colic symptoms, all horses could be released from hospital. Long term results show that all three horses were in good general condition and back to their intended use. Based on these results it could be shown that horses suffering a cecocolic intussusception can be treated successfully with an incomplete cecal bypass.
