European Food Safety Authority reassures safety of dietary PFAS exposure

Dietary exposure to a range of toxic chemicals known as perfluoroalkylated substances (PFASs) is well below the tolerable daily intake (TDI) even for consumers with the highest exposure, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says in an opinion published this month. PFASs have been used for decades in a range of industrial and chemical applications, including as processing aids in impregnation agents for packaging materials, paper, furniture, shoes, cleaning agents and insecticide formulations. One of their best known uses was in non-stick pan coatings although they have now been replaced.
