Chinese government representatives and industry insiders gathered at the IBC AgChem Asia Summit 2011 in Shanghai last month to lay out the road map for the development of the Chinese pesticide industry over the coming years.Zhang Wenming, director of the department of raw materials at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, explained the targets for the Chinese agrochemical industry during the country's current five year plan (2011-2015). Zhang noted that since the period of "reform and opening up" during the 1980s, the Chinese pesticide industry has undergone more than 20 years of development, going from periods of intense pesticide shortages to becoming the "global leader in pesticide production" today. It is on this solid foundation that Zhang hopes the country's pesticide industry will continue to grow, heading towards a more international model. However, he made sure to stress that the pesticide industry is only a fraction of the size of China's overall chemical industry.
