Charts of the dominant orientations of thermal contrasts on IR images from NOAA satellites (statistically significant tangents to the isotherms in the vicinity of a given point) can be used to characterize sea circulation and to automatically detect synoptic-scale eddies. Under complex cloud conditions and in the case of sub-stantial small-scale turbulence, the compositional charts must be plotted and the lifetimes of dominants must be estimated. An approach to plotting such charts is proposed, the lifetimes of dominants are estimated, and the dependence of the temporal stability of dominants on sizes and types of dynamic structures is demonstrated.
