Asia's current gas oil crunch has been blamed on a combination of refinery maintenance and a sharp hike in Chinese imports, which jumped to 1.66 million tons in the first quarter (138,000 b/d), a modest volume but a sixfold increase from the same period in 2007. But while traders see the current diesel squeeze as a short-term problem, a shift in China's transport fuel demand toward greater use of automotive diesel (ADO) could create a longer-term supply problem.
