Recognition of Forms: Problems, Solutions, Challenges

Background information on industrial form recognition is provided: overview of the topic, form classification, processing stages, and software systems most often used. The most pressing set of issues faced by the industry is reviewed along with the solutions proposed by different producers. One problem is addressed in greater detail, that is, recognition of freeforms, i.e., loosely structured documents that do not yield automatic zoning. iOCR, a new software solution, is described as a relief for a certain class of labor-intensive document input tasks. Finally, the industry outlook for the next decade is provided.
