Oil Theft Behind Shell Force Majeure in Nigeria

Nigeria's flagship Bonny Light crude stream remains under force majeure after Royal Dutch Shell shut down the 150,000 b/d Nembe Creek trunkline early last week to repair damage caused by rising levels of oil theft in the Niger Delta. The shut-in follows a surge in theft, which has reached 60,000 b/d — the highest level in three years — for Shell's local joint venture with state Nigerian National Petroleum Corp., whose producing fields are in Nigeria's swamps and shallow offshore (PIW Nov.5' 12).
