Majors Give East Mediterranean Another Look

The discovery in recent years of some 25 trillion cubic feet of offshore gas reserves has transformed Israel's energy equation, and is also having a domino effect throughout the East Mediterranean region, with Cyprus, Lebanon and Syria all seeing a revival in industry interest after a lukewarm response to previous tenders. Cyprus has been the first out of the traps, with Noble Energy, operator of Israel's big offshore gas fields, expected to start drilling offshore Block 12 in the fourth quarter. The acreage's geology is said to be similar to that of Noble's Tamar, Leviathan and Dalit discoveries offshore Israel, and good results could trigger a second Cypriot offshore round in short order (PIW Jan.17'11).
