THE rapid rise in US shale oil and gas production has permanently altered energy markets, leading to the emergence of a "new global energy landscape", as the International Energy Agency (IEA) has put it. As dramatic as the shift has been, the shale industry remains largely a US phenomenon. But the energy landscape could be in for further changes as industry majors scour the globe for the next big shale opportunity.
