KAZAKHSTAN is negotiating with an international oil group, led by BG and Eni, to obtain a stake in the Karachaganak field as part of a strategy to gain greater control over its vast natural resources. Prime minister Karim Massimov said Kazakhstan will fight to protect its national oil interests, but did not reveal what it might offer for a stake in Karachaganak, the only large, foreign-led oil project in the country where the state is not involved.
