Majors Take Plunge in Mexican Deepwater

Three years after Mexico ended state producer Pemex’s decades-long oil and gas monopoly via a historic energy reform, the country has finally become a major destination for upstream investment. On Dec. 5, upstream regulator CNH held a hugely successful auction for deepwater acreage in the Gulf of Mexico, awarding eight of 10 exploration blocks on offer to a geographically diverse group of companies including several international majors. The CNH also auctioned off Pemex’s first-ever farm-out, with a 60% stake in the Trion deepwater oil field, discovered by the state giant in 2012, going to Australia’s BHP Billiton.
