European oil refineries began reporting the severest crude shortages in over 10 years in January,as Turkey took restrictive measures in the Bosporus strait for safety and security reasons,causing tanker delays of up to 25 days.It was a timely reminder of the importance of finding transport routes that bypass the congested shipping route.Analysts claim the shortages are reason enough for regional governments to press on with building new oil pipelines,such as the one proposed from the Black Sea port of Burgas,Bulgaria,to Alexandroupolis,in Greece(see Map 1).
