One of Africa's most ambitious energy projects, the Chad-Cameroon pipeline was never likely to see the light of day.The sheer scale and complexity of the idea, crossing 1,070 km of rainforests and other sensitive landscapes, and affecting communities of Bakola pygmies near the coast, led to intense opposition from environmental groups and activists. The withdrawal of ExxonMobil's early partners,Shell and Elf,in 1999,further suggested that the multi-billion-dollar scheme might best be left on the drawing board.
