Although Kazakhstan has plenty of gas to meet its own needs,most production is in the northwest of the republic,thousands of kilometres from the populous southeast.Until now,the southeast has relied on neighbouring Uzbekistan to supply gas through a pipeline that also dips into Kyrgyzstan en route to Kazakhstan.
