Despite the efforts of Eni and (following the enforced release of some of its exploration licences in the mid-1990s) other explorers,Italy's gas production is in decline.Output peaked at 20.6bn cubic metres (cm) in 1994 and has fallen each year since then,amounting to 14.6bn cm in 2002 (according to Ministero delle Attivita Producttive Statistics).
