The deep-water Trion field in the Perdido Fold Belt, just south of Mexico's maritime border with the US, is turning into a powerful symbol of a new collaborative period for the energy industry, as Pemex welcomes one-time competitors into the project. When license contracts are awarded on 5 December for what promises to be a plum development, the state-owned oil giant will find itself in a joint venture with private-sector partners to develop oil reserves. It's also the first time that Mexico's regulator, the National Hydrocarbons Commission, will pick the partners for Pemex instead of the other way around in what amounts to an enforced collaboration.
