Majors to detail job cuts amid cost-cutting

The majors are expected to provide more details on job cuts when they report their third-quarter financial results. Shell has set the bar high for its peer group in July, revealing planned staff and direct contractor job cuts of about 6,500 this year, even before its planned takeover of UK firm BG in early 2016 (WPA, 10 April, p2). The move is part of Shell’s plan to cut operating costs by at least $4bn, or 10pc, this year. “We plan to reduce costs further in 2016,” Shell says (WPA, 31 July, p3).
