BHP Billiton prompts super-cycle debate

Chinese economic growth rates are slowing, causing mining firms in Australia to shelve projects and leading to concern that a “commodity super cycle” is over. The world’s largest mining firm BHP Billiton prompted the debate over the super cycle when it revealed on 22 August that it has delayed and scaled back $50bn worth of projects, most of which were in Australia. Among the affected projects is the expansion of the world’s largest single uranium deposit, Olympic Dam in South Australia.
