US president Barack Obama is pledging to cut US oil imports in half by 2020 as part of a broader strategy to revive the country’s still weak economy. Accepting the Democrats’ nomina- tion as party candidate for November’s presidential election, Obama countered Republican challenger Mitt Romney’s proposal to make the US an “energy superpower” with a plan in which increased domestic production, higher fuel mileage standards and greater reli- ance on renewable energy sources could enable the country to significantly reduce its dependence on foreign oil.
