Russian oil firm Bashneft has won the rights to explore and develop the oilprone block 12 in Iraqi's western desert under terms offered in Iraq's fourth licensing round, after accepting Baghdad's $5/bl of oil equivalent (boe) remuneration fee. Together with UKbased Premier Oil and Vietnam's PetroVietnam Drilling, Bashneft bid for the 8,000km2 block 12, located in Iraq's Najaf and Muthanna provinces, but originally sought a fee of $9.85/boe that was rejected by the government.
