The US Treasury Department is desig- nating Iran’s state-owned oil company NIOC as a “proliferator of weapons of mass destruction” because of its alleged ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard. The US has long targeted NIOC for sanctions and in September designated the company an agent or affiliate of the Revolutionary Guard. The designation comes as key provisions of the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act take effect.
