Baghdad waters down injection target

Iraq has yet again pushed back the completion date for a water injection system that is critical to boost production from giant oil fields in the south. Work on the project finally began in January, with initial efforts focused on reviewing previous work by ExxonMobil. High priority surveys and a contract for initial engineering and design will be awarded in the third quarter of this year, consultant CH2M Hill project director James Prette says. Initial work is targeted for completion in the third quarter of 2014, to be followed by the award of engineering, procurement and construction packages in 2015 and the start-up of operations in early 2017 (WPA, 5 October, p2).
