Shell plans get shareholder cold shoulder

The ability of the majors to pioneer offshore arctic exploration is increasingly in question, as shareholders take up environmentalist concerns. Shell’s annual general meeting (AGM) in the Netherlands on 21 May saw chief executive Peter Voser forced to defend his company’s arctic strategy in the wake of last year’s trou- bled drilling campaign off Alaska. Voser told investors that a recent US government review into the failings of Shell’s exploration programme in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas “gave us new learnings, which we are embedding”.
