A US federal court judge has rejected BP’s method for calculating economic losses to businesses after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, throwing into question the company’s ultimate liability. US district court judge Carl Barbier on 5 March upheld the inde- pendent oil spill claims administrator’s interpretation of a settlement agreement between BP and businesses and indi- viduals harmed by the spill. BP had paid out $7.7bn for economic losses by the end of last year, and was anticipat- ing future claims of another $800mn for a total of $8.5bn.
