摘要

Total chief executive Christophe de Margerie appeared in a Paris court on 21 January to face corruption allegations related to the UN’s oil-for-food programme in Iraq. He is accused of enabling the misuse of company assets during his time as senior vice-president of the firm’s Middle East division. Total stands accused of knowingly buying Iraqi crude in 1999-2000 that Saddam Hussein’s regime had allocated to prominent French individuals in return for political favours. The firm is further accused of buying crude from Baghdad in 2000-02 on which surcharges had been paid to finance commissions for Iraqi officials.
