US president Barack Obama vigorously defended his strategy to address climate change during his State of the Union address on 20 January, vowing not to allow a Republican-controlled Congress to stymie his efforts. Obama has made reducing the US’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions a pri- ority of his presidency. In his speech, he blasted those who “try to dodge the evi- dence” of climate change. Republicans say they will block US environment agency the EPA from regulating GHG emissions from power plants. But the EPA is pushing ahead with plans to final- ise those rules this summer.
