The majors hope that 2013 will be the year that they reclaim the mantle of being the oil industry’s leading explorers. But giant discoveries by more nimble upstream independents in new exploration frontiers keep showing them up. US firms Noble Energy and Anadarko are opening up LNG export provinces after making some of the world’s larg- est natural gas discoveries of the past decade. Noble has made finds off Israel and Cyprus totalling around 35 trillion ft3 (990bn m3) of recoverable gas. Anadarko claims to have found up to 65 trillion ft3 of recoverable gas off Mozambique.
