Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe is heading for a key victory in parliamentary elections this month that would enable him to push ahead with plans to secure new energy supplies and revive a stalled nuclear industry. Abe’s ruling coalition is on course for a sweeping vic-tory in the 21 July election to Japan’s upper house. The gov-ernment is enjoying high popularity ratings as a result of the “Abenomics” monetary and economic policies, which helped push GDP growth to 4pc in the first quarter com-pared with a year earlier (WPA, 5 April, p6).
