The deadly attack this month on the In Amenas gas plant in Algeria is prompting a reassessment of security for the industry across north Africa. BP and Norway’s state-controlled Statoil have withdrawn dozens of staff from Algeria after a hostage crisis that is thought to have claimed the lives of nine of their staff and those of numerous other contractors, including at least 16 from Japanese engineering firm JGC (WPA, 18 January, p9).
