Saudi Arabia gets heavy in the Neutral Zone

A behind-the-scenes row is developing between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia over an onshore patch of territory by Kuwait’s border in the countries’ shared Neutral Zone. The disagreement’s latest manifestation is the shut-in of the Neutral Zone’s 300,000 b/d offshore Khafji field on the orders of Saudi Arabian head of operations Abdullah Helal. He cites the high level of harmful emissions at the project for the shut down. Khafji heavy crude is earmarked for Japanese buyers that must find alternative supplies.
