The Australian government on 23 October awarded five new petroleum exploration leases offshore Western and South Australia, securing promises of A$580mn ($555mn) of investment over the next three years. Chevron was granted two licences in the Great Australian Bight offshore South Australia, close to where BP is spending around $1.4bn on exploration.
