The Oxford Institute of Energy Studies seeks to dampen expectations of a UK shale “revolution” in a new report UK Shale Gas: Hype, Reality and Difficult Questions, warning that 300 new wells could be needed each year to achieve output of 8bn m3/yr, or 10pc of UK gas consumption. Even with incentives for communities, this level of drilling is likely to prove “a test in terms of public acceptance”.
