Anti-nuclear sentiment has resurfaced in Japan with two former prime ministers joining forces in Tokyo’s election for governor,aiming to block the return to nuclear power envisaged under the coun-try’s new energy policy. Former prime minister Morihiro Hosokawa’s candidacy has sparked interest in the 9 February election,which was called after former governor Naoki Inose resigned over a loan scandal.Char-ismatic former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi has backed Hosokawa’s bid, calling on voters to give up nuclear power,his latest attempt to pressure cur-rent prime minister Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic party(LDP)administration to rethink its policy of reinstating nuclear in the country’s energy mix(WPA, 15 November,p11).
