Mozambique sets pace in LNG race

East Africa’s burgeoning offshore gas producers are competing to deliver the region’s first LNG exports. US independent Anadarko Petroleum and partner Italy’s Eni plan to bring on stream an initial 10mn t/yr of LNG production in Mozambique in 2018. The project has the capacity to expand to at least 50mn t/yr based on offshore gas resources of over 100 trillion ft3 (2.8 trillion m3). But limited domestic infrastructure, an evolving legislative environment, political risk and the need for a unitisation model based on joint development with Anadarko’s block 1 and Eni’s offshore block 4 need to be resolved.
