New US energy secretary Ernest Moniz will examine studies of the potential impact of US LNG exports before approving any more of the most sought- after export licences. Moniz took up his post on 21 May, four days after the Department of Energy (DOE) ended a two-year approval hiatus and authorised the Freeport LNG project in Texas to ship LNG to international markets. Under the 1938 Natural Gas Act, the DOE determines whether exports of natural gas would be in the public interest. Shipments to countries that have free-trade agreements with the US are deemed to be in the public interest.
