Rosneft considers Iraqi project

Russian state-controlled oil firm Rosneft has pre-qualified to bid for a stake in the 4bn bl Nasiriya field development in southern Iraq. The firm has not said it will actually bid, and the cost of building an integrated 300,000 b/d refinery as part of the development may deter the company from participating. This is not the first time that Rosneft has pre-qualified to bid on Iraqi projects. But the firm has been cautious about expanding in the country in the past. Rosneft was involved in discussions with strategic partner ExxonMobil last year about taking a role in the 29bn bl West Qurna 1 field development. But the company decided against it after chief executive Igor Sechin said the project was too problematic and risky.
