Russian independent gas producer Novatek’s second-quarter profits rose by 20pc to 11.5bn roubles ($350mn). But this growth lagged a 29pc rise in revenues to Rbs58bn thanks to a 56pc increase in the amount of gas sold direct to consumers and an 18pc rise in prices to Rbs3,117/’000m~3. Novatek has this year been selling gas to buyers in the Kostroma and Moscow regions, far from its key fields in west Siberia. This and higher pipeline tariffs pushed up delivery costs by Rbs9.8bn to Rbs22.8bn in April- June. As a result, operational expenses rose by 49pc to almost Rbs40bn.
