West of Shetland on track despite Rosebank fears

The UK’s plans for new output from the west of Shet-land face a setback as Chevron doubts the economic via-bility of its deepwater Rosebank project. But other key developments remain on schedule despite cost inflation. Chevron says its 240mn bl of oil equivalent (boe) Rose-bank project does not offer adequate returns on investment in its current form (WPA, 22 November, p9). The firm is working with its partners to strengthen the project’s eco-nomics and further evaluate costs ahead of a final invest-ment decision next year. The initial cost estimate for devel-oping Rosebank was $10bn. Cutting costs will be a chal-lenge given the inflationary pressures on deepwater projects.
