Polish shale pessimism deepens

The appeal of Poland's nascent shale gas sector is in question as foreign operators warn of growing obstacles above and below ground. Poland is playing a pioneering role in the exploration of European shale gas prospects, holding the continent's larg- est technically recoverable resources, estimated at 187 tril- lion ft3 (5.3 trillion m3), according to the US EIA (WPA, 22 June, p6). But Poland's largest licence holder, US upstream independent Marathon Oil, voices doubts about the viability of its operations there if potential tax increases go ahead.
