US EPA at centre of firestorm

US environment regulator the EPA is under assault by Republicans in Congress. The political furore kicked off with revelations that former EPA administrator Al Armendariz compared his enforcement philosophy in 2010 to ancient Roman soldiers crucifying villagers. Armendariz, who oversaw environmental enforcement in states from Arkansas to New Mexico resigned on 30 April after a video of his speech surfaced. He refused to testify at a 6 June US House of Representatives hearing.
