Exploration slowdown hits lease sales

Lower crude prices dampened interest in the US Interior Department’s latest lease sales in the US Gulf of Mexico. Nearly 45mn acres (182,000km2) were on offer in two auctions in the central and eastern US Gulf. High bids in the central US Gulf sale totalled $156mn for 694,000 acres, down from $539mn in a similar auction last year.
