Biofuel mandate costs trigger strategy rethink

Rising costs to comply with biofuel mandates are pushing some refiners in the US to hunt for assets further downstream. Prices for credits used to prove compliance with the government’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) scheme have risen to the highest levels in three years. The price of renewable identification numbers (RINs), which are used to prove that minimum amounts of biofuels entered the US transport fuel supply in a given year, were three times higher in July than the same month in 2015.
