Demand concerns take centre stage

The threat of contagion from the eurozone crisis was high on the agenda at Opec's fifth international seminar in Vienna on 13 June. A worsening of the eurozone's financial and economic problems would further slow the global economy and threaten oil demand growth. Opec ministers, oil majors and consumers at the seminar united in their concern about the uncertain state of global economy. But the seminar was less able to determine the impact of oil prices on demand growth and the level of prices required to sustain investment in conventional and non-conventional resources.
