Denmark’s Maersk to hive off energy business

Danish conglomerate Maersk is splitting its transport and energy businesses, citing the possibility of joint ventures, a merger or listing for the oil division, while its main growth focus remains on transportation services. The oil and oil-related businesses “will require different solutions for future development including separation of entities individually or in combination from [shipping unit] AP Moller-Maersk in the form of joint ventures, mergers or listing,” with Maersk seeking a “solution” within the next two years. Maersk’s energy divi- sion will include Maersk Oil, Maersk Drilling, Maersk Supply Service and Maersk Tankers. Maersk Oil will focus on “optimising and strengthening its strong position in the Danish, British and Norwegian part of the North Sea”. Maersk Oil will aim to strengthen its portfolio through acquisitions or mergers, the frm says.
