Independents see more upside in Colorado’s Wattenberg

Independents’ experience in developing Colorado’s Wattenberg field shows that it is far too early to start defining the limits of US unconventional oil output. Noble Energy and Anadarko Petro- leum, the largest acreage holders in the Wattenberg field, are fine-tuning drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques to optimise well performance, boosting oil and natural gas recoveries and widening their profit margins. The firms are ear- marking large chunks of their global capital budgets — 35pc at Noble, and 15pc at Anadarko — to Wattenberg.
